Minimalist techniques by themselves, without the hard work of changing our hearts, became an idol. So, a few months later we started seeing an accumulation of things. We were using the techniques of Minimalism to simplify our life, but not getting to the true core of the lifestyle. Our problem was that we attempted to adopt the minimalist lifestyle without incorporating minimalist values. It became a game to figure out how little we could get down to, and it was sort of thrilling to see the bags of stuff piling up to give away. Initially, we tidied, organized, and minimized the things we had. My goal was to have a Pinterest worthy home. Our goal: to simplify our life and not focus on stuff so much. We gathered as much information as we could about the techniques of the tidying up guru and set off to become like the minimalist masters. Last year, my husband and I decided after watching a few episodes of the Marie Kondo Show on Netflix, that we would try out a minimalist lifestyle. This post will share some of the most impactful. During the course of that time we have learned how to live simply by incorporating several minimalist lifestyle tips. This could be coworkers, family or friends.Are minimalist techniques practical? Can a family of four really tidy up and decrease their stuff? During the first 2 years of marriage, my family has been on a journey to minimizing our amount of clutter. Next week I will be continuing my minimalism series and sharing some tips on how to encourage your entourage to also help you with this quest. It may just inspire them to get rid of their own clutter! Get a friend to help you declutter your closet or attic it’ll give them a first-hand look at how and why you’re minimizing your items. Show your friends your decluttered, minimalist spaces and watch how helping them see your new life will inspire them to create a better one. Instead of telling others that they ‘should’ become a minimalist like you, simply be happy with the way you’re living your life.Īctions speak louder than words. Instead of saying you don’t want to end up like your friend in debt, explain how consuming less feels better for you (and your finances). If people ask why you’re adopting this lifestyle, make it about you and not them. Many people have a hard time relating to minimalist living, however if you explain why owning and buying less helps you have a happier life, they’ll understand better. Focus on the good, and you’ll help inspire others! For example, talk about all of the benefits that have come into your life since getting rid of your TV in order to read and write more. Realize all of the positive benefits of having a minimalist lifestyle versus all of the negatives of your previous lifestyle. If you’re looking to have more freedom, flexibility, reduced stress or even save money, getting honest will help you refine your goals. Get clear on why you’re embracing a minimalist lifestyle.
